Just because I can, I have decided that this blog will not just be about whatever political topic is getting under my skin.  And in that vein, I would like to direct your attention to this Slate article about an artist and some of her work.  Art is so damn subjective that it kinda boggles my mind.  I know next-to-nothing about art, so you can take my opinions on it with as many grains of salt as you need, but the crap in the article is just that: crap.

It’s not interesting or revealing or anything.  It looks like censorship, plain and simple.  In fact, it looks worse than censorship because censorship tends to leave more in the picture than these do.  These images completely dehumanize the women.  It is ridiculous on so many levels.

Maybe it’s just me.

Out of the Night that Covers Me…

Obviously, this little blog (which hit 100 posts as of Howard Zinn’s passing) has suffered in recent months.  It started strong but lost a member some time ago, and then things got even spottier.  I tried to recover and that didn’t last long.  And it has only gotten worse from there.  My problems are all mine, so I won’t get into details here.  Let me simply say that I am still here and I am working through the things I need to and will try my damnedest to keep writing here.  And I will try to keep the extreme darkness out of the posts.  If you are one of the few who keep coming back, please don’t stop now.  And if you are new here, well, just know that there is much more to come.

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeoning of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find me, unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

by William Ernest Henley (1849-1903)

Giving Thanks

Posted in Not Political with tags on November 26, 2009 by Black Pumpkin

Today is, of course, Thanksgiving.  And so as is tradition, it is important to express what we are thankful for.

I am thankful for so much that I can’t possibly enumerate them all.  Mostly I like to give thanks for the basics.  I have a wonderful wife and home, my health, family and friends.  I live in the US and have access to plenty of food and clean water.

My situation could be like so many people in the world, but it isn’t, so I am thankful for all that I have.
