Howard Zinn, one of the world’s premier historians and one of my favorite writers, died on Wednesday.  He was 87.  He will be greatly missed.

Let it die peacefully…

This was written in December.  And I can honestly say that I could not have said it better myself.

Time to pull the plug on health care “reform”

Unrecognized Problems

Posted in Domestic on January 20, 2010 by Black Pumpkin

There will be a lot of talk (actually there already is) about Scott Brown’s win in Massachusetts and what the Democrats (and perhaps the people) should take away from that.  I would like to highlight some things that will likely not be discussed in the mainstream media.

Health care is not the problem.  Martha Coakley did not lose because of the health care debate.  She lost because she was a bad candidate and because this is the beginning of the mid-term elections.  The mid-term elections will be really bad for the Democrats because the economy is still in the toilet.  And especially because unemployment is still so high.  Unless the economy turns around and turns around quickly, the Democrats can expect to lose a lot of seats in the real mid-term elections and the White House in 2012.  When the economy is doing well, people praise the President and when it is doing lousy, they blame him.  It’s not fair because it doesn’t matter who the President is, there is only so much he can affect the economy.

The real problem when it comes to elections is the fact that there are no real choices.  On the one hand, you have Democrats who have control of both houses of Congress and the White House and still can’t get anything done.  Of course, the system is designed to be very slow and it is very easy to make things even slower.  In addition, the Democrats have been taking money from the health insurance and pharmaceutical companies for a long time now.  So if you expect to have real reform that will actually help people, you are looking in the wrong place.  But if you don’t like the Democrats, then you obviously have to pick the Republican.

Of course, the Republicans are worse than the Democrats.  Their rhetoric is similar (We want to help the American people blah blah blah…) but they are really worse.  Or I should say that they are worse when it comes to certain things like social issues.  Gay marriage, abortion, you name it.  But when it comes to economic issues, they are pretty much the same.  One group says they want to help all Americans, but they only help the rich and the other group does the same fucking thing.  If you’re not rich in this country, don’t expect shit from the government.  Regardless of what party they are from, all of these politicians are bought and paid for by their corporate paymasters.

Some people will blame the banks for this economic crisis (and there are plenty of things that they did that should be scrutinized) and the banks are saying that they did not cause the housing bubble to burst.  I am not going to argue one way or the other.  I think the problem is with capitalism itself.  There have been booms and busts since we started using this system to allocate resources.  It is inherent in the system.  And this is one more reason why we need to scrap the whole damn thing and start over.

The worst part is that the effects of the economy are not felt equally.  Right now, the heads of the biggest banks are back to making large bonuses.  They have not felt the impact of the downturn partly because they got bailed out by the government and partly because they are huge fucking corporations.  They don’t care what the unemployment numbers are except that it makes their jobs even easier.  Think about it.  If you are a manager and the people under you aren’t doing their job to perfection, you just get rid of them because there are ten people in line to take that job and will take less money to do it.  And if you are one of those people looking for a job, you just want something to pay the bills.  And the longer it takes to find a job, the more likely you are to take whatever you can get.

The economy does well and very few people benefit.  And when the economy tanks it affects so many people.

P.S.

I know my last post was a bit brash and overheated.  That’s how I felt, so that’s what I wrote.  If you don’t like it, don’t read it.  Or leave a comment and tell me how wrong I am.  Or write me off as some hell-bound idiot.  It’s up to you.

P.P.S

Perhaps I should not have come back to writing when I did.  I am still pissed off.  I am cynical and I look around and all I see is shit.  And I know this post is all over the place.  So please bear with me while I get my head straight.  Or you could just ignore me.  There are plenty of other things to do on the internet, like tweeting about your bathroom habits or telling your Facebook friends what you had for dinner.

Haiti and Prayers

Posted in WTF? with tags , , , on January 17, 2010 by Black Pumpkin

I know I’ve been gone for a while and since I know that there are so many of you out there that hang on my every word, you have been waiting, hoping, praying to have me back here.  So I am back.  I am not in a good mood, which is never a good time to write, but I am doing it anyway.

Unless you are truly living under a fucking rock, you know that a devastating earthquake hit Haiti on Tuesday and they are still reeling from its effects.  And since you know about Haiti, I’m sure that you have heard all of the newscasters, pundits and whoever else say, “The first thing we need to do is pray.  Then we need to help these people.  Send your donations…”

Well, you know what I say?  Fuck praying!  Obviously, God hates poor, black people.  That’s why He decided to kill as many as He could by causing an earthquake in one of the poorest countries in the world that just happens to be filled with black people.  So I don’t know who you plan on praying to, but you are probably wasting your time because He knows what He’s doing, and right now, He is killing poor, black people.  So quit praying because you are probably just pissing him off.

On the other hand, you should send some money to a relief organization because the poor, black people that God is trying to kill need help, not worthless fucking prayers.

By the way, we can only blame this on God because it is not like a hurricane that could be caused by global climate change.  No, this was an earthquake.  So it was God’s fault.  He did it.  And He did it because He hates poor, black people.  I don’t know why.  I haven’t figured that part out yet.  But I know He does because only someone who hates poor, black people so much could find the best way to kill as many as possible.

“Their infrastructure is really shitty already, why don’t I send them an earthquake, that’ll show them that I really hate them and want them to fucking die!  Yeah!”

If you have a better explanation, I would love to hear it.
