Hello world!

Welcome to Butter, Not Guns.  We are a collective of individuals who believe that a better world is possible.  In these pages, we will discuss that world as well as our own.  We need to understand what is going on out there if we are to figure out how to change it.

If you have ideas about how to make the changes that are necessary, please join the conversation.

If the title is a reference, I don’t know it. I do generally prefer butter to guns. However, butter is awfully high in saturated fats. I generally don’t cook with butter. Olive oil is a much healthier option. So I’d like to change the name of the blog to Olive Oil, Not Guns. Is that possible?

Just kidding. Actually, do you know how to set me up with a different username. I don’t like how this one turned out. I’d much prefer spaces like yours.

  2. Guns vs. Butter is a classic political science phrase that refers to how governments spend their money. I’m sure you can figure out what the Butter is and what the Guns are in that equation.

Also, the title has Butter in it. I thought you would be happy about that…

So, Butter represents social programs and Guns represents military spending?

    • Precisely. It is a matter of priorities. Do you spend most of your money on weapons while starving your citizens (North Korea)? Or do you allow them to have weeks and weeks of vacation time, paid maternity leave, and free health care (Sweden)? Or somewhere in between (the US perhaps)? It’s all about priorities. And that is why I thought the title would be apropos for the three of us.
